In tough statements, at a time when the United States is waiting for two painful weeks due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, Washington, Wednesday, called on its citizens abroad who wish to return to their homes to do so now, before the new Corona virus turns into a "tsunami" that is lost with it. The ability to evacuate them.
To date, the US State Department has organized evictions of more than 300,000 Americans from abroad, but it warned, on Wednesday, that its ability to continue to do so could diminish "within weeks."
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump warned that the United States would go through two "very, very painful" weeks in the fight against the emerging coronavirus.
Trump described the Covid-19 pandemic as a "scourge", saying, "I want every American to be prepared for the difficult days ahead."
"There is no guarantee that the State Department will remain able within a few weeks to continue to assist in the evacuations," said Ian Brownley, who is in charge of coordinating the repatriation of US nationals from abroad, warning that what is available today is from commercial flights or even chartering planes. Especially in the near future it may become "impossible".
"If there are American citizens who want to return to the United States, they should make their arrangements now," he added during a conference call.
The diplomat explained that the reason for issuing this warning today is that many American citizens abroad do not seem aware of the seriousness of the situation, at a time when the number of countries closing their borders and the number of airlines that stop their flights due to the spread of the deadly epidemic is increasing.
"If you are standing on the beach and the ground is shaking beneath you, you do not stay there waiting for the tsunami to arrive, but rather are running in search of a safe haven," he said.
"Well, in this case, the earthquake did indeed happen, and it is time for you to take refuge in a safe haven and do not hope to receive any help later," he added.
Brownley said that the State Department has returned to date more than 31,000 Americans since the outbreak of the epidemic in China, noting that these were in more than 60 countries and were returned on more than 350 flights.
