In light of the strict preventive measures taken by most countries of the world to confront the Corona epidemic, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte warned violators of the quarantine rules that they might be shot if they make trouble.
"It is necessary for everyone to cooperate and follow domestic quarantine procedures," Duterte said in a televised speech, as the authorities strive to slow the infection and prevent the country's fragile health system from collapsing.
The Philippines recorded 96 deaths from the Coruna virus and 2,311 confirmed infections, and after the number of infections was small at first it is now in the hundreds per day.
Duterte, the controversial president, said: "The situation is getting worse. So I again notify you of the seriousness of the problem and you have to listen. My orders to the police and the army are that if there are disturbances and you see that your life is in danger by facing you, then kill them by shooting."
He added: "Is this understood? Kill. I will bury you instead of causing trouble."
His comments came after the media published reports of unrest and arrests, on Wednesday, of residents of a poor area in the capital, Manila, who were protesting against the lack of food aid provided by the government.
But the national police chief said that the security forces "realize that the president is expressing his seriousness about public order, and that the forces will not shoot anyone."
